FRENCH II HONORS

Course# 521 Level: 1 Credit: 1
Open to: Freshmen who have passed the Proficiency Test; Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: Recommendation of present Foreign Language teacher

This is an intermediate course that presumes a student's ability to handle grammatical concepts easily with a minimum review of French I material. The course will develop the language skills in greater depth with the help of the language laboratory and digital classroom. A study of the culture and civilization of French speaking countries is also included.

Prerequisite: Recommendation of present French teacher

This course promotes oral and written communication by paying particular attention to vocabulary and structure needed for making linguistic connections. Extensive use of language laboratory. Connections are made through the study of French and Francophone customs and art via the internet in the digital classroom.

ADVANCED FRENCH

Open to: Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: Recommendation of present French teacher

This course provides advanced training in speaking and writing French, and includes extensive practice of listening and reading skills. In addition, students will study advanced grammar and idioms in order to expand their speaking and writing skills. Video interpretation as well as listening comprehension will be emphasized in the language laboratory. Reading comprehension and critical writing will be analyzed in the digital classroom.

Prerequisite: Recommendation of French teacher

This course is offered under the auspices of the Early College Experience at the University of Connecticut.Successful completion will earn the student 6 college credits which may be transferable to the college of his/her choice. This course also prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement Exam in French Language. The course includes reading, intense grammar review, vocabulary, idioms and compositions.

SPANISH I CP

This is an introductory course which presents Spanish pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, as well as aspects of modern Hispanic culture. Equal emphasis is placed on mastering the skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Use of the language laboratory is an integral part of the course.

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH I CP

Open to: Sophomores who have completed the English Skills program

Conversational Spanish emphasizes activities that engage the student in actively practicing listening and speaking skills. The intention of the program is to build confidence in vocabulary, pronunciation and presentation, and to introduce the student to Hispanic culture.

This is an intermediate course that presumes a student's ability to handle grammatical concepts easily with minimal review of Spanish I material. The course will develop reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension skills in greater depth than is usually possible in a second-year course. A study of the culture of Spanish speaking countries is also included.

SPANISH II CP

This is an intermediate course aimed at strengthening the speaking and listening skills of a student while developing reading and writing skills. Grammar study forms an important part of this course. In addition, a study of Spanish culture is included with the help of the language lab and digital classroom.

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH II CP

Open to: Students who have taken Conversational Spanish I
Prerequisite: A passing grade in Conversational Spanish I

This course is a continuation of Conversational Spanish I and actively involves students in proficiency-based exercises and activities in order to build communicative competence. The course stresses real life applications using an interactive approach to learning culture, vocabulary and grammar with emphasis on listening activities in the language lab.

Cultural comparisons and connections are made through the study of Spanish and Hispanic customs and art.

SPANISH III CP

This course provides an ongoing review and expansion of grammar as first presented in Spanish I and II with particular emphasis on developing communication skills. It also provides integration of target language, culture and technology.

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH III CP

Open to: Select Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: Completion of Conversational Spanish II or Spanish II CP teacher recommendation

Students will continue to acquire the four proficiencies of the Spanish language with an emphasis on listening and speaking. The course will be presented through the video program Destinos. This program is divided into episodes which “transport” the student to many locations in the Spanish speaking world. This course will enable all students of Holy Cross to complete three years of a world language prior to graduation.

SPANISH IV CP

Prerequisite: 80% average in Spanish III CP; recommendation of present Spanish teacher

The components of this course will allow students to continue their development of the four proficiencies of language acquisitions: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It includes Latin American cultural readings such as folklore and legends. Enhancement of communication skills will be emphasized.

ADVANCED SPANISH

Prerequisite: 80% average in Spanish III Honors or a 95% average in Spanish III CP; recommendation of Spanish III teacher

The components of this course will include authentic Spanish and Hispanic cultural readings, advanced practice in communication by means of composition writing and oral presentations. Advanced grammar structures will be mastered. The language laboratory will be used to increase listening through video presentation. The digital classroom will be used to increase reading and writing skills.

AP/ECE SPANISH

Prerequisite: 90% average in Advanced Spanish; recommendation of present Spanish teacher

This course prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish Language. AP guidelines will be met. This is an intermediate course designed to expand the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills developed in Italian 1. More emphasis is placed on strengthening knowledge of Italian grammar. As with Italian 1, culture is an important component of this course.

ITALIAN 3 CP

Prerequisite: 70% average in Italian 2 CP

This course is designed to expand students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Italian. As with Italian 2, vocabulary and grammar are further strengthened. Italian literature and culture are also further explored. The use of the language lab and the digital classroom are an integral part of this course.

ITALIAN 4 CP

Prerequisite: 80% average in Italian 3 CP; recommendation of present Italian teacher

This course will allow students to continue and expand their acquisition of the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the Italian languahe through the review of grammar and the exploration of the literature of Italy.
