Founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Father Basil Moreau, Beatified in LeMans, France

Mr. Amadeo Rinaldi, Interim Principal of Holy Cross High School represented the school community at the Beatification Ceremony of the founding father of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the Venerable Basil Moreau (1799-1873). The official ceremony took place on Saturday, September 15, 2007 in LeMans, France, the birthplace of Moreau.
Beatification is a step toward being declared a saint. The first step in the process was completed in 2003 when Father Basil Moreau was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II who approved the proclamation that he lived a life “heroic in virtue.”

Beatification takes place after a comprehensive study of the Servant of God’s life, teachings and virtues allowing the title of Blessed to be bestowed upon him/her, affirming that they are a model for Christian life and that a miracle has taken place through their intercession. At this time, a liturgical feastday in honor of the Blessed Father Moreau will be added to the Church’s calendar. This celebration is generally limited to the group or community founded by that person or to a location where the person had significant influence.

In order for Father Moreau to complete the process of canonization and ultimately be declared a saint, there will be further examination of his life and virtue and the endorsement that a second miracle is attributed to his intercession.  At the time of canonization, the Holy Father declares that the Blessed is among the Saints in heaven and inscribes the person’s name on the official list (canon) of the Saints of the Church.  It is at this time that public devotion to the newly declared Saint is extended to the universal Church.

Holy Cross High School, founded in 1968, offers a college preparatory education within a faith-centered environment to boys and girls in grades 9-12. The school is sponsored and staffed by the Brothers of Holy Cross, Eastern Province, in association with the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame and dedicated lay men and women.
