Social Studies Teacher

Holy Cross High School is seeking a full-time Social Studies teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. Part Time ESL Teacher

The English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, CT contributes to the fulfillment of the school’s mission and objectives by providing international students with the educational and social tools they need to succeed, particularly in their early years of transition to high school.  This position is established to assist individuals who need to expand their English language skills and/or receive support with their classes in order to succeed at Holy Cross. 

Holy Cross currently has an opening for a part-time instructor to teach approximately 25-hours/week during the regular academic year.   This is a 10-month appointment subject to renewal.   The ESL teacher will teach a course required for all first year international students.  Based on performance, including but not limited to GPA, the ESL teacher will recommend students who would benefit from continuing their ESL training in their second year at Holy Cross.  The ESL teacher will work in close collaboration with the Guidance Office and align her/his efforts to complement the support services and programs offered by the Guidance Department.  The ESL teacher will also work in close collaboration with Holy Cross’ international student recruitment and placement agency, AIEP (Apex International Education Partners), which provides support to international students and their host families.

The qualified candidate will have the ability to deliver instruction to students of varying English language proficiency, both within a class and with different courses. Duties include teaching grammar/writing, reading/ conversation, and supporting students through the use of supplemental classroom materials, as well as recording grades and attendance. This position also requires collaboration with other teachers at Holy Cross. 

A master’s degree in TESOL or related field is required. Experience in teaching second-language learners preferred.  Although not required, the ideal candidate will also speak Mandarin and be able to teach one section of Mandarin to upper level students.

Director of Athletics 

Qualifications

  • Previous coaching experience
  • Previous high school teaching experience
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Knowledge of the overall operation of an athletic program
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education or related program of study

Spirit of the Position
To provide overall leadership of the many athletic offerings to guide programs that provide rich and memorable learning experiences consistent with the educational philosophies and mission of Holy Cross High School that foster the development of conscience, responsibility, and growth in the face of competition in each member of our school community.

Duties and Responsibilities (10 month position)
Administrative (both HCHS and the NVL)
1. Reports directly to the Principal while supervising the entire athletic program.
2. Administers all interscholastic policies and procedures as prescribed within the Rules and By-Laws of the CIAC and HCHS and maintains a program that promotes sportsmanship and integrity.
3. Interviews all new potential coaches and recommends to the Principal the best candidate(s).
4. Develops and publishes all interscholastic game schedules.
5. Contracts  game officials including those assigned by local officials' boards.
6. Arranges transportation, equipment, personnel, Police, Fire Marshall, and medical personnel for all events.
7. Staff press box personnel (announcer, scorer, video) while providing fair access for radio, press, and the visiting team.
8. Is responsible, with the Principal, for cancellations or postponements due to weather or other conditions.
9. Maintains current records for each sport, such as wins or losses or school awards such as league or state championships.
10. Informs coaches of students’ scholastic eligibility quarterly, medical eligibility in conjunction with our school nurse, and any behavioral ineligibility after due process.
11. Works with Principal to develop an annual budget for considering requests of the head coach for equipment/clinics.
12. With the Director of Student Activities and coaches, programs for recognition assemblies, spirit rallies, and award ceremonies.
13. Conducts preseason coaches meetings that include discussion of new policies, the coaches’ handbook, preseason sign-ups, roster forms, athletic handbook inventory sheets, budget request forms, coaches evaluation forms, etc.
14. Hosts annual preseason review of the student and parent athletic handbook with all parties.
15. Represents Holy Cross High School as an Executive Board member of the Naugatuck Valley League (and at state meetings) and as such takes on a leadership role in the governing of that league.
16. Performs such other duties as the Principal and the President of School may direct.

Supervisory
17. Observes and evaluates coaches in order to make recommendations of job expectations and assignments.
18. Attends or arranges supervision and financial management of home contests by administrative personnel.
19. Acts as site director for all league and state tournament events that are assigned as home games for his/her school.
20. Ensures coaches have completed student files containing:  parent consent, medical forms and obligations for lost equipment.

Facilities
21. Coordinates the use of HCHS athletic facilities or an outside facility with the Principal, Director of Facilities, Director of Finance & Operations , and City of Waterbury.
22. Provides for the cleaning, repair, and storage of all athletic equipment and maintains an inventory of all equipment.
23. Coordinates with the Director of Facilities  and Principal the repair and maintenance of athletic fields, track, baseball fields and gymnasium, making sure all facilities are safe for play.
24. Assumes the responsibility for the use of keys and the return of such keys at the end of the season.
25. Along with the athletic trainer and coaches, provides procedures for proper use of the training and weight rooms.
