FOUNDATIONS OF LANGUAGE

This course is designed to build English reading comprehension and writing skills through the study of basic grammar, structures and vocabulary. The study of vocabulary will include the influence of Modern Languages upon the English language. Additionally, there will be significant study of Latin and Greek influences upon English vocabulary.

SPANISH DIVISION

SPANISH I CP

This is an introductory course which presents Spanish pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, as well as aspects of modern Hispanic culture. Equal emphasis is placed on mastering the skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Use of the language laboratory is an integral part of the course.

SPANISH II HONORS

Open to: Freshmen who have passed the Proficiency test; Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: 90% average in Spanish I CP; recommendation of Spanish I teacher

This is an intermediate course that presumes a student's ability to handle grammatical concepts easily with minimal review of Spanish I material. The course will develop reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension skills in greater depth than is usually possible in a second-year course. A study of the culture of Spanish speaking countries is also included.

SPANISH II CP

Prerequisite: 70% average in Spanish I CP

This is an intermediate course aimed at strengthening the speaking and listening skills of a student while developing reading and writing skills. Grammar study forms an important part of this course. In addition, a study of Spanish culture is included with the help of the language lab and digital classroom.

SPANISH III HONORS

Prerequisite: 80% average in Spanish II Honors; 95% average in Spanish II CP; recommendation of present Spanish teacher

This course promotes oral and written communication by paying particular attention to vocabulary and structure needed for making linguistic connections. Use of the language laboratory and digital classroom implement practice in the target language. Cultural comparisons and connections are made through the study of Spanish and Hispanic customs and art.

SPANISH III CP

Prerequisite: 70% average in Spanish II CP; recommendation of present Spanish teacher

This course provides an ongoing review and expansion of grammar as first presented in Spanish I and II with particular emphasis on developing communication skills. It also provides integration of target language, culture and technology.

SPANISH IV CP

Prerequisite: 80% average in Spanish III CP; recommendation of present Spanish teacher

The components of this course will allow students to continue their development of the four proficiencies of language acquisitions: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It includes Latin American cultural readings such as folklore and legends. Enhancement of communication skills will be emphasized.

ADVANCED SPANISH

Open to: Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: 80% average in Spanish III Honors or a 95% average in Spanish III CP; recommendation of Spanish III teacher

The components of this course will include authentic Spanish and Hispanic cultural readings, advanced practice in communication by means of composition writing and oral presentations. Advanced grammar structures will be mastered. The language laboratory will be used to increase listening through video presentation. The digital classroom will be used to increase reading and writing skills.

SPANISH AP

Open to: Seniors
Prerequisite: 90% average in Advanced Spanish; recommendation of present Spanish teacher

This course prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish Language. AP guidelines will be met. All work done in this class is college level work, including the readings, intense grammar review, vocabulary, idioms, compositions and language laboratory and digital classroom activities.

ITALIAN DIVISION

ITALIAN 1

ITALIAN 2

This is an intermediate course designed to expand the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills developed in Italian 1. More emphasis is placed on strengthening knowledge of Italian grammar. As with Italian 1, culture is an important component of this course.

ITALIAN 3

Open to: Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: 70% average in Italian 2 CP

This course is designed to expand students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Italian. As with Italian 2, vocabulary and grammar are further strengthened. Italian literature and culture are also further explored. The use of the language lab and the digital classroom are an integral part of this course.

ITALIAN 4
Course #564 Level: 2 Credit: 1
Open to: Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: 80% average in Italian 3 CP; recommendation of present Italian teacher

This course will allow students to continue and expand their acquisition of the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the Italian languahe through the review of grammar and the exploration of the literature of Italy.
