Jennifer Gugliotti '93, JD, LL.M and Associate Vice President and Senior Counsel at John Hancock was recently named co-chair of United Way's Women United Executive Committee by the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley. Women United is comprised of a group of 2,000 accomplished women leaders in the Greater Boston area who bring positive change to those in need.
"Three big components fall under this role," said Jennifer. "I, along with my co-chair, Kim Reinert, will engage the current members, fundraise and grow the number of women in this group."
Jennifer will also work on three of Women United's biggest events of the year. These include the Community Baby Shower, the Women's Leadership Breakfast and the Thanksgiving Project.
"We hosted this year's Community Baby Shower for over 200 women who receive support from various agencies the United Way supports in the Boston area," she said. "We provide them with education, essential items and clothing and a fun party atmosphere. At the Women's Leadership Breakfast, we invite speakers and local leaders from supporting agencies. This past year, over 730 women attended, and we raised over $250,000. The Thanksgiving Project is a larger United Way effort, but Women United contributes to it. We collect and package Thanksgiving-ready packages that are delivered to families in need."
In addition to her work with United Way, Gugliotti serves on the Board of Directors of Silver Lining Mentoring, a Boston non-profit that provides mentors and life skills coaching to Boston area youth in foster care.
And for Jennifer, this is all volunteer. By day, she works for John Hancock where she provides legal support to the Chief Marketing Officer and is responsible for the company's intellectual property. Her role entails protecting the Brand and negotiating sponsorship opportunities including the Boston Marathon, Boston Red Sox and a recent endorsement deal with former Red Sox player David Ortiz.
"I support our Chief Marketing Officer," she said. "I am responsible for providing legal support to Marketing, Sponsorship and Public Relations."
Upon graduation from Suffolk Law in Boston, Jennifer worked in private practice for a number of years. An opportunity presented itself in 2005 to work in-house at John Hancock in a nontraditional legal role with an emphasis on sales and marketing and she transitioned to her current role in 2011.
Jennifer brings her marketing and philanthropic experience and passion to Women United. "There are so many statistics that speak to women and philanthropy. Women give more and they are more philanthropic than their male counterparts. There is a great group of women in the Boston area who share the same vision, "We can accomplish more together."
While at Holy Cross, Jennifer was a member of the Varsity Swim team, Ski team and Tennis team (Captain her senior year). "Holy Cross taught self-responsibility and the importance of giving back to the community which has been important in college and in my professional life." "I enjoyed my years at Holy Cross and some of my best friends today are HC classmates."
