Peer Ministers Commissioned at Holy Cross's First Friday Liturgy

The Holy Cross High School community gathered together for the First Friday Liturgy of the 2017-2018 school year led by special guest, Father Joseph I. Khoueiry from Our Lady of Lebanon in Waterbury, CT.

Holy Cross celebrates a liturgy at the beginning of each month throughout the school year. President Peg Leger was instrumental in implementing this into the school program a few years back. She felt that it was important that the students, faculty and staff gather together as a community and celebrate this sacred Catholic ritual.

The first liturgy of the school year is always a special one because it is also the Commissioning Ceremony of the Peer Ministers. These senior students serve under the auspice of the Campus Ministry Program. They lead several community service initiatives including retreats, prayer services and student activities.

The 2017-2018 Peer Ministers are: Juliana Amaral, Sydney DelPriore, Richard Denardo, Caitlin Dreher, Daniel Flaherty, Caitlin Kinsella, Alexandra Koulouris, Sofia Lupoi, Brendan Lynch, Kathryn McDuff, Michael Mencio, Jillian Noack, Adriana Perugini, Allie Peschel, Mikayla Pieksza, Nicole Rohlman, Nikki-Lee Rostedt, Dillon Sanzari, Madison Smith, Charles Spreda, Nicole Strielkauskas, Elena Tormo, John Vito and Taylor Wade.

This was the first liturgy under the guidance of Kyle Piatak, Holy Cross's new Director of Campus Ministry. "I've always had an interest in the church," said Mr. Piatak. "It was heavily influenced by my family. My father used to read the Bible to us and sing hymns before we went to bed. I was also able to witness the wonderful charity given by my grandfather."

Mr. Piatak joined the Holy Cross community eight years ago upon graduation from the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio where he earned his B.A. in Theology and Philosophy. "I was hired a couple of days before school started," he said. "I sent out letters to all of the Catholic schools in Connecticut, looking for any possible openings. I received a phone call from Peg Leger just as the school year was starting. Both she and (fellow teacher) Ann Estrada were my mentors and a great support to me. My immediate hiring was God's Providence in action."
