The following scholarships are available to all currently-enrolled freshman students at Holy Cross High School. 

The scholarships below require an additional application: 

APEX Scholarship 
Dylan McDermott '79 Scholarship 
 

APEX Host Families Global Citizen Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000
Requirement: Answer the Question: (minimum of 2 paragraphs): "What does it mean to be globally aware and why is it important?”

Apex International Education Partners (AIEP Host Families), owned and operated locally by Feng Chen and David Guerrera ’04, places international students with host families at Holy Cross. They are offering two scholarships.

  • Shows an interest in foreign language and culture and/or pursuing international studies business or education post-graduation.
  • Must have taken/will take an Honors or AP language course and/or have maintained a 90 or above cumulative average to date in all of their classes.
  • Preference will be given to those involved in global community service or who have embraced learning about other cultures, especially with current international students attending Holy Cross.

The Bernier Scholarship 

Amount: $500

This scholarship was established by the Bernier family in honor of Edmonde Bernier. This scholarship will be awarded to a girl with:

  • Strong English and Writing Skill
  • Who Demonstrates financial need
Ciarleglio Family Scholarship 

Amount: $2,000

This award is given in memory of Jerry and Jessie Ciarleglio, parents of former Holy Cross faculty member, Mr. Ciarleglio ’72; grandparents of Christopher ’00, Adam ’01, Sarah ’08, and Kaitlin ’08.

Congregation of Notre Dame Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

The Congregation of Notre Dame Scholarship was established in 2001 to commemorate and honor the dedication and commitment of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame (CND) and their foundress St. Marguerite Bourgeoys.  The Sisters involvement in Catholic education has been very evident for over 100 years in the city of Waterbury. The Sisters have served at Notre Dame Academy, Waterbury Catholic High School and Holy Cross High School. The Religious Community was founded over 300 years ago by St. Marguerite.  Her mission and love for   education is now evidenced on four continents.

Erminia Cronan Scholarship 

Amount: $1,300

This scholarship was established in 2008 by Steven Cronan ’83 in memory of his mother, Erma Cronan, a longtime employee of Holy Cross High School.

  • In good standing 
Theodore P. Esposito Memorial Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

This award is given in memory of Mr. Theodore P. Esposito, father of Holy Cross alumni, members of ’94, ’97 and ’99 graduating classes.  As Mr. Esposito excelled in both the classroom and on the field playing football and baseball,  preference will be given to students who play sports.

Thomas & Agnes Ginty Memorial Scholarship 

Amount: $500

Monsignor Thomas Ginty ’76 and his sister, Theresa Butkovic, established this scholarship in 2008 in memory of their parents.

Hogrefe Family Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

Two annual scholarships were established in 2000 in honor of the Hogrefe Family.

Jennifer Kulpa Memorial Scholarship 

Amount: $500

The Kulpa family established a scholarship to be awarded annually in the memory of their daughter, Jennifer.  This scholarship recipient will be chosen by the Math Department.

  • Freshmen Girl (Preference given to Middlebury resident)
  • Shows exceptional talent in mathematics
Margaret Leger Scholarship 

This Scholarship is offered in memory of Mrs. Margaret Leger, former President & Principal of Holy Cross High School who passed away in May of 2018. The criteria for this award are as follows:

  • The student must demonstrate financial need
  • The student must have strong academic performance
  • The student must be currently involved in an athletic or performing arts program
Anne & Charles Martone Memorial Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

This scholarship is in memory of Anne and Charles Martone, parents of graduate Mike Martone ’74.

DYLAN MCDERMOTT SCHOLARSHIP 

Amount: $1,000
Requirement- Answer the Question: “How will this scholarship help me at Holy Cross?”  Include any special financial circumstances or hardships which you believe should be considered.

This scholarship was established in 2011 by actor, Dylan McDermott, Class of ’79.

  • Primary consideration will be given to a student in the visual or performing arts.

Monteiro FAMILY Scholarships  

Amount: $1,000

The Monteiro family established two scholarships; one in 2002 and the other in 2011.  Each award is renewable yearly based on the recipient’s continued meeting of the criteria.

George M. & Mary E. Oliver Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

This scholarship was established in 2006 by Attorney Robert Livermore ’91 in memory of his grandparents, George and Mary Oliver.

Frank Steponaitis Scholarship (Currently Awarded - Available for the 2025-2026 School Year) 

Amount: $1,000

This scholarship was established in honor of Frank Steponaitis, member of the Holy Cross faculty for 25 years.  As a lifelong educator in Catholic schools, Frank was passionate about teaching, was dedicated to his students, and espoused strong Christian values.  He is remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor.

Student Council "Spirit of the Cross" Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

This scholarship award is sponsored by the Holy Cross Student Council.  It was created to recognize the true “Crusaders” of Holy Cross, those students who demonstrate spirit and pride in their school by involving themselves in all aspects of Holy Cross life. 

  • Nominated by an administrator, faculty, staff or student member of the Holy Cross community. 
James E. Tobin Scholarship 

Amount: $1,000

The James E. Tobin Scholarship was established in 1999, by Thomas Tobin ’79, in honor of his father.  This  scholarship acknowledges Mr. Tobin’s ideals of scholarship, sportsmanship and a dedicated work ethic - traits he instilled in his nine children.  The recipient will be chosen at the discretion of the administration and the coaches of the boys and girls swim team.
