In a statement released by the Diversity Board, they stated that their goal for this essay contest was  "to inspire and educate the students of Holy Cross about Black History while also providing students a safe space to express their creative outlooks on why we celebrate, how it has changed our lives, and showing our great appreciation for those pioneers who have paved the way for a equitable world "
