This course is designed to help incoming freshmen transition to the educational program and supportive community of Holy Cross High School. Coursework includes instruction in the following areas: understanding learning styles; developing a growth mindset; managing time effectively; setting goals; applying effective reading, note-taking, and test-taking strategies; seeking assistance; and, understanding the values of the Portrait of the Crusader.

CRUSADER SEMINAR II

The primary focus of this course is the continued development of each student’s academic and social-emotional skills to support the values of the Portrait of the Crusader as well as promote success in high school and beyond. This seminar will focus on the skills associated with different types of thinking as well as effective communication skills. In addition, students will explore varied topics that will facilitate their success in coursework and in the community, including diversity awareness, financial literacy, healthy lifestyle choices, and planning for the future. The course culminates with a student-created, timed presentation to apply the concepts and skills learned.

HEALTH & WELLNESS I

Through Health and Wellness I, students study the functions and interactions of the body systems and analyze the relationship between these systems and optimal health. They also examine the impact of nutrition, fitness, mental health, and substances on health, welfare, and personal fulfillment. Through the learning activities in this course, students practice their skills of informed decision making while planning for dietary needs, constructing a personal fitness plan, and working to maintain mental health.

Health and Wellness reinforces the skills and dispositions detailed in the Holy Cross Portrait of a Crusader by teaching students to respect, support, and directly help each other and to demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and resilience with a collaborative spirit.

HEALTH & WELLNESS II

Through the Health and Wellness II course, students will continue to study the functions and interactions of the body systems and analyze the relationship between these systems and optimal health. They also examine the  impact of personal safety,emergency skills, and illegal substances on health, welfare, and personal fulfillment. Through the learning activities in this course, students practice their skills of informed decision making while planning for keeping them safe from personal harm, what to do in an emergency situation and working to maintain mental and physical health.

Health and Wellness reinforces the skills and dispositions detailed in the Holy Cross Portrait of a Crusader by teaching students to respect, support, and directly help each other and to demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and resilience with a collaborative spirit.

BUILD A BETTER BODY

Juniors & Seniors

This class gives an opportunity to use the Ross Fitness Center and develop a personalized weight training program. The instructor will go over the proper techniques for weight lifting, as well as, which exercises will help with the results they wish to achieve. Nutritional aspects for fitness will also be discussed. This is a participation class. It is expected that the student will dress and participate. This should be taken into consideration for students who will be in season and do not want to lift during their sport season.
